RE/MAX Associates Raise Nearly $6,000 for Children’s Miracle Network

We are overjoyed to share that our CMN Miracle Makers Raffle, Miracle Kids Putt-Putt and Dairy Queen Dilly Bar sales helped raise nearly $6,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in Minnesota and Wisconsin! Raffle winners were drawn last week at the RE/MAX Fall Forum events in Milwaukee, WI and St. Paul, MN. In addition, Miracle Kids Anothony and Logan joined us over lunch and challenged our agents at the putting green. In Minnesota, Dairy Queen Dilly Bars were the dessert of choice with all proceeds benefitting CMN.

Thank you to all who purchased raffle tickets, played putt-putt, ate DQ Dilly Bars, and supported our overall cause of helping kids. Also – a BIG congratulations to all of our raffle winners!

Meet Miracle Child Emma Groll!

Four-year-old Emma Groll of Bangor, WI is living proof that the size of the heart does not affect a person’s capacity to love. She was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome—a rare heart defect in which the left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped. Today, Emma is a happy, loving little girl thanks in part to the contributions of RE/MAX Agents through Children’s Miracle Network.

Emma had the first of three open-heart surgeries at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee when she was just nine days old. Her third surgery was last August, soon after she turned 3 years old. She now receives ongoing care at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse- also a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

Emma has a special connection to RE/MAX. Her aunt, Stephanie Waldvogel, is an agent with RE/MAX Heritage in Fond du Lac. “I will never forget the day we went to see her after her first surgery. She was hooked up to several machines. It was so hard to imagine what she’d already gone through at such a young age,” remembers Stephanie.

Through it all, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has been there to support the Groll family. “They paid for gas, food and motel stays for each of Emma’s surgeries. They helped pay for an amazing family weekend just before Emma’s last surgery,” remembers Emma’s parents Liz and Justin. “This allowed us, for a brief time, to forget about the surgery and just be a normal family.”

“I’m honored to be a part of RE/MAX and am so grateful that they support CMN,” says Stephanie. “It means so much to me, and my family, that RE/MAX agents and offices are so involved with CMN- and the fact that they’ve helped Emma along the way makes it even more special. Thank you!”

Meet Miracle Child Dejonna Bates!

Winterfest Court, band, student council, forensics competition, colorguard and soccer – these are just a few of the activities that Dejonna Bates of Plainfield, WI has enjoyed as a high school student thanks in part to RE/MAX Agents and their contributions to Children’s Miracle Network.

On July 12, 2010, Dejonna was at summer camp. During the free swim at the aquatic center, she was preparing to jump off of the high dive when suddenly she stumbled and fell approximately 20 feet, landing on the concrete pool deck.

“I could see my friends on the edge of the pool and they looked very scared and they were crying. I thought maybe I was dying,” remembered Dejonna. Due to the severity of Dejonna’s injuries, she needed the care of a Trauma Center and was transported to Ministry Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, funded in part by Children’s Miracle Network. In addition to a severe concussion, Dejonna’s right wrist was fractured and her left arm severely broken in three places. Her jaw, broken in two places, was put back into place with screws and then wired shut. She had a crack in her pelvis and three cracked ribs.

After only eight days, extensive care and rehabilitation, Dejonna was able to go home. “I was excited to get out of the hospital, but I had met some very special people who I had grown to trust to help me,” said Dejonna. Being home was just the beginning for Dejonna’s long rehabilitation. Progress in physical and occupational therapy was slow, but steady.

“Having all the support and love I had around me helped me realize I could be low, move backwards, be mad and miserable or I could be in control with an upbeat attitude, move forward to my goals and happy about every little success,” said Dejonna. “I learned my attitude controlled more than I ever thought possible.”

Meet Miracle Child Ian Hoy!

Before arriving at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, Ian Hoy’s outlook was bleak. Ian, then 7, had been struck by a car just 10 blocks from home. He sustained massive head injuries, then spent three weeks sedated and in a coma at his local hospital in St. Cloud, MN. Thanks in part to the contributions of RE/MAX Agents through Children’s Miracle Network, Gillette helped Ian regain the ability to talk, walk and just be a kid.

When Ian first arrived at Gillette for inpatient rehabilitation, their optimistic approach made an impression on Ian’s mom, Robbi. “From the moment we arrived, they spoke to my son as though he could hear them,” she says. “They smiled at me. They talked about the future. It was as though I had been in a dark room with no windows, and then Gillette turned on a light and opened a door.”

Ian’s progress defied expectations. His family and therapists were shocked by the changes they saw each week. “After the first week, he could give his dad a ‘thumbs up,’” Robbi recalls. “By the second, he could say, ‘I love you.’ And by the third, he was taking his first steps since the accident!” Despite predictions that Ian would need six months of rehabilitation, he went home from Gillette after only five weeks. Although he still faces challenges, he continues to work on skills with therapists and teachers in his community.

“Ian came to Gillette a fragile boy, and left a fighter,” Robbi says. “Gillette brought that out in him – in all of us. Now I have my son back!”

Meet Miracle Child Gannon O’Harrow

Before Gannon O’Harrow of Oconto Falls, WI was born, it was already known that his heart was badly damaged. Today, Gannon is a happy, active toddler thanks in part to the contributions of RE/MAX Agents through Children’s Miracle Network.

Born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the left side of Gannon’s heart was underdeveloped and could not function properly, a condition which would require a heart transplant if he was to survive. To be near him during his hospital stays, Gannon’s mom and dad took turns staying at the Ronald McDonald house which is funded in part by Children’s Miracle Network.

Month of MiraclesThe Herma Heart Center at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin is one of the nation’s top programs for medical and surgical treatment of congenital heart defects and heart disease in children. A special Thank You message to RE/MAX from CMN:

Agent Success Story: Duane Schroeder

Be Committed – Duane Schroeder of The REO Team with RE/MAX Results in Edina, MN found a cause he believes in and has stayed committed, through the ups and downs of the economy, and is finding it’s paying off – in more than one way.

Duane has been with RE/MAX since 2006 and has been a Children’s Miracle Network contributor just as long.  Because his business focus is REO’s he does a lot of work with asset managers; Duane says he forms relationships with them just as he does with traditional clients and will even send them the same closing gift: a CMN Honor Card.  “I send a thank you card to each asset manager I directly work with.  I put their name in as the donor and it’s just a little something they can bring to their manager to say ‘See what I’m doing?’ and of course it’s good for me too.  I also send out Christmas cards; I put a personal note on each card that has a child’s story on the back.  It definitely makes a long-lasting impression on people who have a connection.  And for those that don’t the cards show that even though I’m out here trying to make a living I’m also trying to make a difference.

Duane admits that RE/MAX’s partnership with the Children’s Miracle Network, the two-balloon logo and Honor Card program made it an easy decision to get involved.  “My primary goal was to help build my business.  Working with asset managers can be interesting.  They’re human just like you and me, doing a job just like you and I, and sometimes things don’t always work out.  Sending a CMN Honor Card is one way I can, and have, built friendships and rapport with people I may never meet.  And even if someday it doesn’t help business, I’m still going to do it because it makes me feel good – helping find cures and saving lives feels good.”

CMN Miracle Jeans Day is September 16th!
