Thomas Slupske for President!

Tom Slupske, a RE/MAX real estate agent with RE/MAX Results in Maple Grove, was recently nominated and chosen to be the 2013 President-elect for the Minnesota Certified Residential Specialists (CRS) Board of Directors.

Tom earned his CRS Designation nearly 20 years ago and immediately began putting it to good use in his real estate business practice.  “The CRS designation is the most prestigious among Realtors.  “When I’m working with another CRS designated agent I have a very high level of confidence they know what they’re doing.”  Tom says the additional education, sales and course work that goes into earning your CRS designation lets him know that the agents he’s working with are dedicated, focused, knowledgeable and the transaction has a better chance of closing.   Tom also says he works referrals through the CRS designation. “When I need to refer a client on, I first look up a RE/MAX agent and then I check to see if they have their CRS designation.”  He says it makes a difference in everything he does, including working with his clients. “When I meet with new clients I bring it up in my listing and buyer presentation. I explain how they will benefit working with a CRS designated Realtor.  They realize the quality services they’ll receive with me and my designation.”

Tom has been such an advocate of the CRS designation that a few years ago he was asked to join the Board of Directors and this past year acted as Secretary.  As President-elect Tom will also represent CRS on the Minnesota Association of Realtors Board of Directors.  He’ll continue to promote the brand and bring awareness to its prestigious title and RE/MAX through networking events like the upcoming Holiday Annual Auction & Networking event on December 6th at Edinburgh in Brooklyn Park.  Tom says this is an opportunity for CRS designees and other real estate professionals (Realtors, mortgage brokers, Stagers, Inspections, etc.) to mingle and make a difference.  The annual event is a fundraiser for three charitable organizations.

On his recent Presidential election, Tom says, “It will be difficult to fill the shoes of past presidents but I look forward to working with CRS designees in Minnesota, across the US and other countries.”

RE/MAX Associate Overjoyed with Support!

Mara Mayberry of RE/MAX Results in Woodbury, MN is busy counting.  Not her commissions or transactions – but her blessings.

Mara is a seven year cancer survivor.  In fact, when she started with RE/MAX Results in 2005 she was bald and in a baseball cap, going through treatments.  That same year she became involved with the American Cancer Society, walking the Survivor Lap of the Hudson, WI Relay For Life.

Since then she’s dedicated herself heavily to the American Cancer Society, creating a team for the Woodbury Relay For Life event in 2006, and joining the planning committee in 2007.  2012 has been Mara’s biggest year yet.  Mara was Chair of the 2012 Relay For Life in South Washington County and helped raise $277,832 – a $7,832 surplus of their initial goal of $270,000!

Mara says there were 119 registered teams and more than 1,200 participants, including some of her RE/MAX Results colleagues.   “14 agents from the Woodbury RE/MAX Results office generously and graciously helped in Relay For Life’s fundraising efforts.  Between April and August they donated either a percent of their commissions or a flat rate, raising $5,715.”

But truth be told, RE/MAX Results actually helped raise $11,430 for Relay for Life. “When Marshall Saunders (RE/MAX Results’ Broker/Owner) found out about my involvement in Relay For Life, he approached me about becoming a sponsor and set up a matching goal, donating an additional $5,715.”

Mara says while exceeding their financial goal was quite rewarding, it’s the relay event itself that gets her every time. “It’s very empowering and comforting for a survivor like me to participate.  There were more than four thousand people at this year’s South Washington County Relay For Life, and they’re all there reflecting on those we’ve lost to cancer, those going through it, and celebrating those who have overcome cancer.  It’s tremendous.”

One of Our Own Featured in the New York Times

Emma Faris in the New York TimesEmma Faris of RE/MAX Results was just trying to sell her parents’ home when she got a call from a New York Times Reporter.

“The New York Times was looking to do a comparison piece on what your money will get you in different parts of the country. He thought this particular home was unique, as it is a California ranch style and on 3.33 acres, but only 10 minutes from downtown St. Paul.

On closer inspection, the home offered a number of custom features that drew his attention including “3,426 finished square feet with 3 wood-burning fireplaces. …The front of the home has floor to ceiling windows, enabling fabulous views from all sides of the home. The living room has an entire wall of rock that was imported from Montana. There’s even a custom doggy shower in the main floor laundry.”

Emma also highlighted the location as a selling point. “Sunfish Lake is the Twin Cities BEST kept secret.  It is a 1.7 squre mile community, nestled about 3.5 miles south of downtown St. Paul and about 10 minutes from the airport.  Its population is 525 and that stays pretty stable, as all of the lots have to be a minimum of 2.5 acres.  In the 1950′s it was used as a summer cottage getaway for city dwellers.  Now it is home to current and former NFL & MLB players, politicians, & famous authors.”

Taking RE/MAX to the Mountain

What began as a personal challenge for one RE/MAX executive is becoming a global initiative for all RE/MAX associates.  RE/MAX Results’ CEO, Lynn Foulke, is “Taking RE/MAX to the Mountain” and you’re invited!

In 2011 Lynn climbed to one of three summits of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.  She calls it an adventure of a lifetime and says that she quickly fell in love with the country and the people.  Now, she wants others to experience the same thrill she did.

Lynn is inviting RE/MAX associates from around the world to join her in “Taking RE/MAX to the Mountain” next January 2013.  The adventure includes an expedition to climb to one of the summits of Mount Kilimanjaro as well as a 3-day safari and charitable element, which will support local porter assistance programs, early childhood education centers, and trekkers’ local communities.

Now’s the Time to Buy….But it’s Not a Buyer’s Market

The RE/MAX North Central Seasonal Trend Report was recently distributed to the Twin Cities media highlighting seven local trends real estate agents from around the metro are experiencing.

Fox 9 News featured the trend report and interviewed RE/MAX Results agent, Travis Sabby, during their 9pm news cast Sunday night, April 29th.

Watch the video to hear Travis’ take on why it’s a great time to buy, event if it’s not necessarily a buyer’s market.

A Happy Ending

I recently received an email with a photo attachment from Kelly Berkley with RE/MAX Results in Eden Prairie, MN.  Her positive words and outlook on the current housing market were a nice reminder that, even though some national reports on the housing market and its recovery are glum, dreams are coming true daily and happy endings are a reality.  I thought you might also like to see it:

“This young, newlywed couple could only afford a small, small mortgage payment. (“Find us a house that is cheaper than rent” said the buyers!).   They both work full time, and go to school almost full time. With a down payment in the bank, the search began.  This little jewel of a cottage was found, negotiations were firm and quick, and they moved in before Halloween.   Their first new purchase was a big bag of candy to pass out to the little costumed trick-or-treaters!

Foreclosed properties can have a  happy ending, and this is a fine example.

This entry level segment of my my market will never make me rich. But these two have a ton of friends, and have already sent me 2 referrals.  Working with sweet, solid young people is a great pleasure.  They learned patience, endurance, and an entire semester of economics, business, and savings and loan procedures.  They in turn teach their friends, and so on, and so on.  They are the future.  They are a wonderful part of my sphere of influence.  They also happen to be my son and his precious bride.”

Thanks for sharing, Kelly!  If you have a positive story to share, email me at pr@remax-nc.net.

A RE/MAX Romance

nancydarronWhen people think of RE/MAX they usually think of real estate, but what about romance?  Well, this little love story has a RE/MAX ending…but it all begins with Max.

Max Hall and Zach Morris have been friends for more than 7 years.  Meeting in elementary school they formed a fast friendship that quickly turned into after school play dates and weekend sleepovers.

Their parents, Nancy Hall and Darron Morris, met each other of course, but it was brief door-way conversations while dropping the boys off or picking them up.  Nancy admits she thought Darron was good looking from the get-go but didn’t have any reason to believe he was single.  Darron says Nancy’s personality drew him in but he didn’t want to pursue things too soon.  So, they became friends.

hall_morris_kids-copy_1And they remained friends for 5 years.  Max and Zach, Nancy and Darron, even their other children, Max’s twin sister, Emily, and Zach’s brother, Alex, formed a friendship.  Through an out-of-town move and a school change the kids continued to get together while Nancy and Darron continued their friendly chatter.

But finally, Darron decided the kids’ friendship was solid and secure, knew he and Nancy would remain friends no matter what, and made his move; he invited Nancy out for drinks.  They realized quickly they had a lot more in common than the kids:  they attended Mankato State University at the same time, lived in Coon Rapids at the same time, and attended the same church at the same time.

Needless to say, that first night of drinks went well enough that there were three more months of dates.  They knew what they had was pretty unique; apart from having so much in common, the kids got along amazingly well.  They finally decided to “break the news” to the kids, waiting for the groans of disapproval.  What they got instead was a near applause; the kids thought their new relationship was awesome!

nancydarrondave2 ½ years later, last year about this time, Nancy and Darron took a few major steps: Nancy started working with Darron, a 12-year veteran and REO specialist with RE/MAX Results; they brought the families together under one roof; and they got engaged!

Nancy says the last year has been a wonderful whirlwind.  She has since earned her real estate license and is now working independently on growing her own buyer-focused real estate business with RE/MAX Results.  She also planned an impromptu summer wedding…

nancydarronweddingBoth Nancy and Darron knew they wanted a small wedding, Nancy just didn’t realize how small until one weekend Darron asked if she wanted to get married that coming Tuesday!   He had the whole thing planned so Nancy’s older children could be there, as well as their parents and some close friends.  They had a private ceremony at their home on July 12, 2011.

Now that the buzz of the wedding has settled Nancy says she and Darron are both focusing on their RE/MAX real estate careers and raising their 4 teenagers.  And despite 4 teens in the house (and some sibling rivalry between the siblings) she says they’ve all found their niche and get along famously.

The Journey to Mount Kilimanjaro

It didn’t start with a detailed plan, rather a simple idea: to do something spectacular on the year she turned 50.

Lynn Foulke, CEO of RE/MAX Results, wanted to do something grand and meaningful to honor her 50th year.  But she didn’t just decide to climb a mountain one day.  Rather the mountain, and not just any mountain, but Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and one of the “7 summits of the 7 continents”, called to her; and that Lynn says is where the real adventure began.

To prep for her journey, Lynn spent 7 months physically and mentally training.  She kicked up her training routine a few notches with various core, aerobic and strength conditioning such as yoga, hiking, indoor and outdoor stair climbing, running, biking and circuit training.  And in June of 2011, Lynn, along with six other trekkers, three guides and 21 porters, spent six days putting her skills to the test; climbing to 18,638 feet to reach Gillman’s Point (one of three summit points) on Kibo Peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.

During her journey Lynn trekked through various climate zones beginning at an altitude of 6,000 feet in the hot and humid 90 degree rainforest, through the heather, moorland and arctic desert moon-scape terrain up to the glacier capped summit – frigidly cold at minus 10 degrees.  Lynn trekked over snarly roots and unforgiving rocky terrain with the last 4000 feet of the steep summit ascent covered with pulverized volcanic rock that had no discernable foot hold.   The last 1000 feet consisted of a nearly vertical climb over a large boulder field.  All this exertion while air pressure and the ability to assimilate oxygen continually decreased to 50% of sea level conditions.

Lynn considers herself fortunate that her body was able to acclimate well.  And at the end it was sheer mental fortitude that propelled her forward just twenty paces at a time until she pulled herself up over the crater rim.

At 6:15 a.m. on her final day of ascent, Lynn reached Gilman’s Point just in time to experience a breathtaking sunrise over the African continent.  Breathtaking it was as the ultra thin atmosphere produced a clarity and vibrancy of color that appeared to redefine the color spectrum.  The intensity of emotion of the moment was surprisingly more than words could describe.

And it was in that moment that Lynn vowed that she would return and return she will in June of 2012 with a new set of adventure seekers she is currently assembling.  Different route, more trekkers, same mountain, same guides, same exhilaration – spectacular!

Lynn says that while most people enjoy hearing stories about the mountain expedition, there is actually a story behind the story.  She explained that it was the country of Tanzania and the people of Tanzania that you couldn’t help falling in love with.  They are kind, gracious, welcoming and for a people who have so very little, truly grateful for what they do have.

Tanzania is indeed a country of great need.  The group that she toured with visited many longstanding church, educational, agricultural, medical, clean water, and orphanage projects sponsored by various organizations including the St. Paul Lutheran Synod and the University of Minnesota.

So inspired was she by these good works that in the short two and one half months since her return, Lynn and a friend of hers have already independently established two Tanzanian micro businesses, a porter assistance program and are in the process of organizing several Kilimanjaro fundraising treks.  These fundraising treks are for the benefit of the Tanzanian people such as for scholarships and endowments for secondary school tuition or malaria prevention.

As Lynn continues to pursue her goal of a second trek up Mount Kilimanjaro, she will continue her training through various local events including the Hartford & RE/MAX Results Breast Cancer Ride, the RE/MAX Results Saturday Cycling Rides and an upcoming Iron Girl dual-a-thon at the end of this month.

She says of all the things that her trek up the mountain epitomized for her is the necessity of feeling alive and full of life, creating your own life adventures – large and small, and taking the time to live in and cherish the moment.  Combine these adventures with doing good works for others and you have a recipe for fulfillment.
