When you’re busy running your own business, it can be hard to step away from the day-to-day and take a look at the bigger picture. You’ve got your head down, running between appointments and meetings, and more often than not, you run out of hours in the day. But one of the keys of running a successful business is taking time to work ON it, not just IN it. While there is no silver bullet when it comes to success, there are some common themes that can help you get where you want to go.  Keep reading for some of the common practices of highly productive real estate agents.

Have a plan
Business planning is a crucial element for the success of your business. Your plan is the foundation of your business and sets the path for your success. Make sure you have set clear, actionable, and measurable goals and that you have them recorded in your plan. Consider the types of goals that will have an impact on your business – whether they are financial goals, marketing goals, or resource goals – and track your activities and progress toward achieving them. Seek out the resources you’ll need in order to achieve your goals (while staying sane). Make adjustments to your plan as needed in order to keep moving in the right direction.

Know your market & your audience
As part of your plan, you’ll want to establish your target markets and your audience.  Make sure you know the ins and outs of the areas where you work. What makes certain neighborhoods attractive to potential buyers? Be the go-to expert in your area for past and potential clients, as well other agents. Positioning yourself as a resource is a great way to expand your network and stay top-of-mind. In addition, be familiar with your target audience. What types of information do they find useful, and what’s the best way to deliver it to them? Using channels that your audience prefers will make your messaging more effective, and can influence how you construct those messages.

Differentiate yourself
Between the internet, word-of-mouth, and advertising, consumers are hit with messages from many different REALTORS. What sets you apart from the rest? Maybe you use in drones and the latest video technology, or invest in professional photography to showcase every listing you have in the best possible way. Another great option is to align yourself with a charitable initiative. According to a Nielsen survey, two thirds of consumers around the world say they prefer to buy products and services from companies that have implemented programs to give back to society. Take advantage of available resources
It’s easy to get comfortable with the status quo, especially when things are going well. Don’t fall into the trap of complacency. Constantly seek out available resources to help you improve yourself and your business. If you find yourself struggling in one area, seek out the events, educational opportunities, and people that can help you improve.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the tools and resources made available to you as a RE/MAX agent! Pop over to Design Center to keep your marketing materials fresh. In addition to resources and events, don’t forget to leverage the power of the global RE/MAX network. Keep an eye out for best practices and the tips at tricks that work for other agents. Check out Above Magazine and don’t be shy when it comes to networking!

Remember, habits don’t form overnight. Start small and incorporate one of these practices into your routine, and then build from there. If there’s one thing we’ve noticed about productive agents, it’s that they don’t quit; they are never satisfied and always keep innovating and reaching to get to the next level.
