Starting a blog can be really intimidating. You might think, I’m not a great writer, I have no idea what to write about, and no one will want to read it! Guess what? This is one of those times that I’m happy to tell you, you are wrong. Blogging is a lot easier than it sounds. In fact, you can be a terrible writer and still be a successful blogger. Blogging isn’t about being a great writer, it’s about providing value to your local community. Don’t get caught up too much in wanting to be the best writer. The more you write the better you will become. Let’s look at some top tips for getting started with your blog.

Just Start

One of my favorite pieces of advice that came out of the RE/MAX INTEGRA Live episode on blogging was that anyone who wants to get started blogging should just start writing. Even if you don’t have a platform yet to post the articles you can start writing them in Microsoft Word or Evernote. Start building up a library of content because the more you write the better you’ll get at it. Don’t worry about sounding professional; sounding like yourself makes the blog more authentic and believable to your audience. If that means recording yourself speaking on a topic and then transcribing what you said, then do it that way. With blogs, readers want to get to know the personality of the writer behind it, no one is looking for a professional journalist from a Real Estate blog. So just start writing!

Stay Consistent

Consistency is key with blogging. You have to write with a consistent schedule, if you’re only going to blog once a week then always publish the post on the same day each week. Ideally, early on you would blog about 3-5 times a week to make sure you have a lot of content for people coming to visit. The more you blog the more likely you are to see results. So pick a publishing schedule and make sure that you stick to it. If you start posting at random times you’ll find that the number of returning visitors will actually slow down.

Provide Value

When you decide to start writing a Real Estate blog you need to, more than anything else, provide as much value as possible. Your postings shouldn’t just be constant promotional messages about you. These happen all the time unfortunately and people can spot them a mile away. Put your focus on providing value as much as possible. Every post should be about making sure the public gets something tangible. You don’t have to mention in every article that if they are looking to buy or sell then they should contact you. That’s implied in the fact that they are on your website and you’re in the business. Just provide value, if you can’t answer the question “What would they get out of reading this?” you should reconsider that post. Put the consumer first when considering your blog posts because they are the ones who matter.

If you’re looking for a good place to start blogging, the first place to consider is your website. You want to drive as much traffic as possible to your website. Speak to your website provider about the options available to you for blogging on their platform. If that’s not an option for you, the best places to blog are either WordPress or Google Blogger. At the end of the day, you should pick the platform you are comfortable using.

So there you have it, if you are thinking about writing a blog then you just have to start writing. Stop making excuses and start writing. Don’t worry about how good of a writer you are or aren’t, just start writing. Then be consistent with how often you are posting and make sure that you are providing value to the readers or they’ll stop reading!
