You may remember in grade school being taught the 3 Rs: reading, writing, arithmetic. They were the foundations of the education system and for good reason! Being able to read gives you the ability to understand ideas expressed through the written word. The ability to write gives you the opportunity to express your ideas. And developing a strong comprehension for math teaches us logic and order. While all these skills may seem elementary – it’s important to keep them top-of-mind in your real estate business. Here are just a few reasons why:
- Reading. Let’s face it, more and more business is being done via emails than in person and on the phone. When you get an email from a client or business associate, be sure to read it…thoroughly. Don’t skim to save time. Make sure you read all the points. If you take the time to read it well the first time you’ll not only cut back on a lot of back and forth emails but your clients and colleagues will notice your attentiveness to their needs. And you know what happy customers make, right? Repeat business and business referrals!
- Writing. Once again, more and more business is taking place online. When you are going to spend the time to reply to an email or (even more visible to the masses) social media post, make sure you’re representing yourself in the most professional way…use proper grammar. Your written word is an extension of you and your business. Keep a professional tone, use proper sentence structure and punctuation, mind your contractions, and use spell-check (even on social!).
- Arithmetic. Real estate can be a 24/7 job. But just because it can be doesn’t mean it should be. Do the math and find order in your career so you can have balance in your life. If you first separate professional from personal and then organize your work day you’ll find that when you’re actually working you can focus on the important things (like reading emails thoroughly and writing properly) instead of rushing through everything and not getting to anything.
As the kiddos start to pack up their pencils, notebooks, and calculators to head back to school, join them on their mission to learn the fundamentals of reading, writing, and arithmetic and get back to the basics in your real estate career.
